With the continuing advances in technology, even hysterectomy can now be performed with minimal invasiveness, which is very different from traditional ways of performing this surgery. This technology is called the Da Vinci surgery.

Serious problems involving a woman’s reproductive system are often treated with a hysterectomy surgery. These problems can include cancer, endometriosis, fibroids, severe cramps, and abnormal bleeding among others.

The uterus is removed in a hysterectomy, although it is also possible for the other reproductive organs such as the fallopian tubes, ovaries, and cervix to be removed if necessary. Conventional methods of performing a hysterectomy surgery involve incising the abdomen to remove the uterus, or having the uterus removed through the vagina. A laparoscope may be used in the latter, which allows for smaller incisions on the vagina.

When compared to an abdominal hysterectomy, a vaginal hysterectomy provides the patient with a more pleasant experience, as the operating time is shorter, resulting in shorter hospital stays. In addition, a vaginal hysterectomy would cause less bleeding and pose fewer complications. The scars incurred from this surgery would also be less visible. Even the use of a laparoscope in a vaginal hysterectomy yields better results than an abdominal hysterectomy. However, the use of a laparoscope may not really be an improvement over the standard way of performing a vaginal hysterectomy, since a laparoscopically assisted vaginal hysterectomy requires longer operating and recovery times. This procedure would also be more expensive.

Da Vinci Surgery – The Superior Technique in Hysterectomy?

In a Da Vinci surgery, only one to two-centimeter-incisions are needed. However, this technique still enables the surgeon to have a good view of the patient’s reproductive system, making this technique applicable even in complicated cases.

A Da Vinci surgery has the following advantages:

* Fainter scars

* Faster recovery

* Ability to resume normal activities faster

* Less chances of complications

* Less blood loss and blood transfusions

* Reduced pain

* Better patient experience

Da Vinci Surgery – How the System Works

The Da Vinci System is used for a Da Vinci surgery, and involves the following:

* EndoWrist instruments

* Vision system

* Patient cart on which are four interactive robotic arms

* Surgeon’s console

The robotic arms on the patient cart are inside the patient’s abdomen and are used by the surgeon to operate on the patient. These robotic arms consist of two or three instrument arms and one endoscope arm.

The surgeon controls these robotic arms through the console and is able to see the insides of the patient’s abdomen through the three-dimensional images that display on the console. Aside from the surgeon, other members of the surgical team take part in the preparation of the port, the installation of the correct instruments, and the supervision of the laparoscopic arms that the surgeon uses.
